Why Now?

Hi Folks,

Earlier this year, the five of us (Steve Morse, Rod Morgenstein, Allen Sloan, Steve Davidowski, Andy West) got together and started talking seriously about playing together as the Dixie Dregs again. Our shared history goes way back in time (for some of us, as far back as high school), to the early 70s. So the synergy of this group has a particular feeling to it that we knew would be worth revisiting. We’ve even been in touch with some of our original crew (Jeff Burkhart, Skoots Lyndon, and David “Dopp” Colvin). Everybody is excited about the idea of our digging into our deep, shared Dregs roots.

From the first incarnation of the Dixie Dregs and through the years since, some incredibly great musicians have been part of the band’s legacy. Those who performed on recordings other than Free Fall include Jerry Goodman, Dave Larue, and Mark O’Connor. Sadly, Mark Parrish and T Lavitz are no longer with us. But Mark’s playing on What If and Night of the Living Dregs, and T’s unmistakable sound on every Dregs album since, certainly keep their memories alive and fresh.

Who knows what the musical future will bring for the Dregs? But right now, we are looking forward to playing live again, and thrilled to be talking to you about it here. Thanks!

I used to regularly scan the Washington Post ‘Weekend’ section for news of the Dixie Dregs coming to The Bayou. While it no longer exists, plenty of good venues do (such as the Birchmere, 9:30 Club, Fillmore) which would readily be filled with rabid Dixie Dregs fans. Don’t forget your friends in the DC Metro area!

Great news! Ironically I was talking with a friend 2 days ago about the Dregs, and wishing y’all would give it another go, and … Shazam!!
I’ll catch you guys in So. Calif. anywhere … the Belly-Up in Solano Beach (San Diego) would be cool! (Pappy & Harriet’s in Joshua Tree … but keep it on the hush;)
How about New Orleans Jazz Fest? Night gigs during the fest? Dixie Dregs in the Land of Dixie … it writes itself!

I do believe from Dixie Grit onward that this band raised the bar for augusta musicians. So many have become great and went on to record and do even greater things because of what Dixie Dregs accomplished. I for 1 wish all of you the very best on the tour, and hope i can make it to a show. Dont miss this folks, butta dan a Zep reunion…lotz o luv…Hoop

My 11 year old nephew is one of your biggest fans. We regularly visit our local record store (Bogey’s West) in Castle Rock Colorado looking for your older albums. Hope you can make it to the Denver area so he can experience you live. Very exciting news!!!

I am beyond excited. Between the Dregs and Steve Morse Band, I have been to at least 30 shows. I think what this thread proves is you need to tour…..the country. I know Steve has alot of commitments and maybe it isnt continuous, but clearly there is a maniacal following, and we have been waiting for a long time. So we hope we see you on the West Coast at your typical stops: Slims, Coach House, Canyon Club, etc, etc.

We’ve been waiting, not so patiently, for so long now. I am not on Facebook and cannot toss my set choices, and so, perhaps they’ll still find their way through other Dregs aficionados. Not a single bad choice in the repertoire, but Road Expense and Hereafter would be great. In the immortal words of Maestro Morse, “Support live music!”

Great news …. Really great news. Coach House in San Juan Capistrano could possibly be a stop? I’m hoping. If not, perhaps the Greek Theatre? Ah heck…. Anywhere in California and we are there. I’ve seen so many shows but it’s been far too long. One time, I remember when Mr. Morse brought the rest of the band along on cassette ~ quite a memorable show…. Many of my best musical experiences were listening in amazement at the perfection of the Dixie Dregs and SMB up close and personal in So. Cal.

My first grandkid will be born in the Atlanta area in the early days of 2018. The Dixie Dregs will hopefully be playing Atlanta a couple months later. I will be traveling from the West Coast to Atlanta to see both the new grandkid and the Dixie Dregs. Not sure which one I’m more excited about. This reunion tour is the best news I’ve heard in a long, long time. I’m thinking about sneaking the newborn into the show so that his/her life can get the best possible start! Decades later, when they have a greater appreciation for the finest of music, they will thank me for that and/or leave flowers on my resting place!

    July 15, 2017 (22:29)

Here’s an odd request – how about the UK? I was never more excited than when Steve joined Deep Purple and the reason was Dixie Dregs. I may be the only UK resident to be a fan of both but I’m still smiling and the only thing that could make this news even better? A gig over here! Go on make me smile even more. A trip over here couldn’t be that bad could it?

    • Freddy Prendy

      July 19, 2017 (14:32)

I very much hope you are considering coming to the Philadelphia area. May I suggest a wonderful new theater known as the Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center. It is located in West Chester PA just 30 miles west of Philadelphia. It is a 327 seat theater and everything is state-of-the-art. A couple of weeks ago I saw Bernard Purdie there and the experience was fabulous. If you’re looking for an opener please consider One Alternative. We opened up for the Dixie Dregs at the Chestnut Cabaret in 1992, The Steve Morse Band in 1998 at the TLA, and most recently the Rudess/Morganstein Project at the World Café in 2013. We have just released our eighth recording this year called Twilight.

Long live the wonderful Dixie Dregs!
